There are different factors associated with the death of a loved one.
These factors will dictate how you will respond. This page will attempt to
explain the possible situations and ways to respond to each.
When Death Occurs at Home
A Physician
Your physician must be contacted in
order for him/her to certify and sign the death certificate. A coroner is
not needed when the family or a friend is in attendance and the person is being
treated by his physician. In the event of an unexpected, unattended or
unnatural death, the police and coroner should be notified.
Your Funeral Director
Your funeral director should be
notified as soon as possible the help relieve the family of any concerns or
worries. The funeral director will be able to assist you with preliminary
details that need to be organized before friends and families are
notified. Your funeral director will arrange to transfer your loved one to
the funeral home as soon as possible and can help you with the police and
coroner if they are called.
Your Clergy
Your minister, priest or pastor should
be contacted, depending on your religious and church affiliation. His/her
support may also be important at this time.
When Death Occurs While Traveling
It is preferable in this situation to
contact your funeral director at home before contacting a funeral home with whom
you are unfamiliar. Your funeral director at home can make all the
necessary arrangements to bring the deceased home. This will save you some
stress and keep the costs to a minimum.
If cremation is to occur, your funeral
director can help with the decision of who to contact. A disadvantage to
this is that the family members not traveling with the deceased will not have an
opportunity to say good-bye. Discussing these matters with your funeral
director will help you make the needed decisions for your family.
When Death Occurs in the Hospital or Other Care Facility
The hospital or care facility will
contact the physician and notify the family when death occurs. They will
usually notify the funeral home you have selected. The family should
contact the funeral home as soon as possible so they may proceed immediately
with caring for your loved one in the manner you desire and begin the necessary
arrangements for services.
